I’ve spent most of today looking at the 1950 census on the 1950 Census website from the National Archives (NARA). The first record I looked for was me. Yes, I’m that old that I am in the census. I just searched for “Halsey” in Steuben County, NY and the top record was for my family. My dad was on the bottom of one page and the rest of us were on the top of the next page. We were living in Corning, NY in a house about 4 or 5 houses down from the hospital where I was born.
NARA used what they call “Machine Learning (AI)” to create their name index. My sister Diane was indexed as “Ulane”and brother David as “Lavid.” I clicked on “Help Us Transcribe Names” to correct their names. They email you a code to verify your email address before you can go through the 3 step process to make corrections. NARA says they will make corrections available for others to see within 24 hours. I think I have made a little over 100 corrections so far today. Only real problem is that you need to get a new verification code every couple of hours.
On the 1950 Census page from Ancestry it shows they currently have 19 states available for browsing. Then it shows that an index is “coming soon” for Delaware, Vermont, and Wyoming.
The FamilySearch 1950 web page has that 17 states are currently available for browsing. They will be using the index that Ancestry creates.
I can’t find what records are available on MyHeritage but I did see a note that says that an index should start being available in a few days. Then they add that the census will be complete by the end of June.
I had the enumeration district number for my family’s residence in 1950 and found it easily. The page shows that I was born in June which indicates that it was June 1949. However, I was born in 1948 and my age should have been 1. Not sure that it is worth fixing.
