Johnny Nash had a big hit in 1972 with the reggae influence song “I Can See Clearly Now.” He was born in Texas but moved to Jamaica in 1965 where he met Bob Marley. Nash had a #5 hit in 1967 with “Hold Me Tight.” That song showed that the reggae influence had already got to him.
Nash wrote “I Can See Clearly Now” while living in Jamaica but recorded it in London, England. It got up to #1 on the Cash Box Top 100 for the week of Nov. 12 – 18. It was on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 4 weeks (Oct. 29 – Nov. 25). It would be his only #1.
Nash died at his home in Houston, Texas on October 6, 2020 at aged 80.
