Gladys Knight and The Pips were back with another hit in 1973 with “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).” It was released prior to them leaving Motown for Buddah Records. In March 1974 the group won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for “Neither One of Us…” At that same award show they won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for “Midnight Train to Georgia.”
“Neither One of Us…” got up to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks (April 1 – 14). On the Cash Box Top 100 chart it was #1 for the week of April 1 – 7.
The Pips were all family. Bubba Knight was Gladys’ brother, William Guest and Edward Patten were her cousins.
