Fairport History, NY World’s Fair, etc.

Last week I scanned Fairport, New York, Centennial, 1867-1967. It is a history of the first 100 years of the Village of Fairport. It is only 88 pages but still has a good bunch of history of the Village. Also in the book is the schedule of event held for the centennial year. This book has been available on Ancestry.com for a while but their scan looks terrible and mine looks just like the original.

That picture on the cover shows a horse being loaded on a packet boat. That would give the horse some rest while the other two pulled the boat along the tow path.

I also scanned 6 programs from the Temple Theater for the 1917-18 Vaudeville Season. I couldn’t figure out which week some of these programs were for.
Unknown week (#1).
Unknown week (#2).
Unknown week (#3).
Week beginning Monday, Oct. 22, 1917.
Week beginning Monday, Nov. 19, 1917.
From a week early in 1918.

When was the last time that I told that have a whole web page of Theater Programs?

Then I scanned 2 things that aren’t local history. One of the attractions at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair was “Billy Rose’s Aquacade.” He had a similar show at the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair. It had men and women swimming and dancing, men and women diving and some songs. I scanned both the 1939 Program and the 1940 Program. The female star for both years was Olympic swimmer Eleanor Holm. The male star in 1939 was Johnny Weissmuller and in 1940 it was Buster Crabbe; both of whom were Olympic swimmers. The show was revamped for 1940 so if someone had seen it in 1939 it would be different in 1940. A lot of the advertisements were different in each program. In 1939 there is an ad for Pepsi and in 1940 an ad for Coke. Eleanor Holm is in a lot of the ads.

Wouldn’t you like to see what the show was like? Well, you can! This film (on Archive.org) includes scenes from the 1939 show from the 6 minute mark until 9:50. This home movie is in color but it is kind of dark.
