Hit Songs of 1974 – #30

The group Paper Lace can definitely be called a “one hit wonder.” Their only hit song was “The Night Chicago Died.” It is about a fictional shoot-out between the Chicago Police and members of Al Capone’s gang.

The song was on the top of the Cash Box Top 100 for the week of Aug. 4 – 10. Then the next week the song was on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It ended up selling over 3 million copies worldwide.

The group had won in 1973 on a British talent show for five consecutive weeks. They somehow managed to stay together until 1984 without ever having another hit.
