Promoting Rochester

Last week I scanned two booklets that promote Rochester.

First is Living in Rochester from 1969. It is only 32 pages. The text is by by Martha Herbrecht Darcy of Darcy Communications but there isn’t much text. This does have some nice photos and some interesting graphics that make up for the lack of text.

Second is You Ought to be in Rochester which has 104 pages. This one was published  in 1984 for Rochester’s Sesquicentennial. It was published by the Rochester Chamber of Commerce. Even though just Rochester is in the title, it covers the whole region. It has a lot more text that describe many aspects about the area. As it was published by the Chamber of Commerce, it has ads and descriptions of some of the businesses. What is amazing is how many of those businesses have either been bought out or have closed.

The photo of Rochester’s skyline that was on the cover of Ought… was the official photo for the 1984 Sesquicentennial. It was taken by Norm Kerr of Eastman Kodak. There were posters for sale with the photo available in 3 sizes at that time.

I also updated the chapter on Vital Records of my Genealogical Guide to Monroe County. Fixed some links that were outdated and added 3 new sources; 1 for New York births, 1 for marriages (Town of Perinton), and 1 for deaths all over the US.
