Elton John had his third hit song in 1975 with “Someone Saved My Life Tonight.” It was a very personal song for him. It is about his attempt to commit suicide in 1968, well before he became popular. He was in a relationship in which he felt trapped.

This is a long song at 6 minutes 45 seconds. Usually record companies would edit songs into a shorter version for radio stations but Elton refused to do that as he thought the whole song was important.

The song only made it to #4 on the Billboard chart for the week of Aug. 10 – 16. That same week it was on the top of the Cash Box chart.
