Janis Ian only had two popular songs in her career but over the years she has released 24 albums. In 1966 she first became known for “Society’s Child (Baby I’ve Been Thinking).” It was the 1975 hit “At Seventeen” that sold more and garnered her more awards. The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Record and Song of the Year but didn’t win Instead, she won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
“At Seventeen” is a ballad about a social outcast in high school. It got up to #3 on the Billboard chart for two weeks (Sept. 7 – 2). I did end up on the top of the Cash Box chart for the week of Sept. 14 – 21.
About 2001 Janis started another career as a writer of short sci-fi stories.
In 2022 she said that she would no longer tour.
In March of this year a movie of her life was released; Janis Ian: Breaking Silence. It has been shown at many important film festivals.
