It is not very often that a novelty record becomes a big hit. Dickie Goodman made it all the way to the top of the Cash Box chart for the week of Oct. 18 – 25, 1975. On the Billboard chart it got up to #4 for the week of Oct 5 – 11.
Dickie’s song was called “Mr. Jaws” and was a parody of the Jaws film. He used what was known as a “break in” as it uses clips from songs at the time. That is the only music on the record as it mostly is a mock interview (with the shark).
Mr. Goodman first hit was all the way back in 1956. He and Bill Buchanan released “The Flying Saucer” which had Part 1 on one side and Part 2 on the other side of the 45. I think that radio stations only played the first side. It brought a lot of copyright suits for using the music clips. Eventually courts would say that using short clips would be considered a parody and could be allowed.
Guinness World Records certified Dickie Goodman for the most charted comedy hits (seventeen) on Billboard. In 2001 he was awarded a posthumous GRAMMY award for “The Flying Saucer” after it was included on a complication CD. So I also included “The Flying Saucer,” below. You don’t have to flip the record over.
