As I have written about before I have been shopping for a new scanner that could scan larger pages. Last week while scanning Rochester; It’s Got It! I noticed that the images came out with a thin green line on them. The old scanner also had some small scratches on the glass. I have been able to edit out the scratches but there was no way to fix the green line. I knew it was time to get a new scanner.
Again I started the search, as before, looking for a flatbed scanner that could scan 11×17 inch book pages. A few years ago just about every manufacturer had one. They must not have sold very well as it is now very difficult to find what I wanted.
They were two that scanned 11×17 pages. One scanner by Plustek sells for $1400 and another by Avina (also branded Avision) that sold for $750. Not only is Avina an “off-brand” but it only shipped from Germany. The Plustek was just too expensive.
I ended up replacing my Plustek 3900 with a Plustek 3800L. Both only scan pages up to 8.5×11 inches. They both look exactly the same. There seems to be a big difference with the light in the new one. It is probably a better grade of LED light and makes a better image. That means I will have to spend less time correcting pages so that they end up looking like the original book pages.
I am a cheapskate. I won’t pay for expedited shipping. The order said that the new scanner would arrive in 7 to 9 days. It ended up at my door in about 48 hours.

Hi Dick. I have a Brother MFC-J6535DW XL all-in-one that prints and scans up to 11×17. It works great for me, but probably not so hot for you doing copies from books.
Take Care,
Dennis
That wouldn’t work for me. I need a scanner that has a free edge where you hang a book over that edge.
