New Pictures

I spent last week adding new pictures to the website. I ended up scanning 48 new postcards including this one of the inside of Sanderl’s Restaurant. There are lots of pitchers hanging on the wall behind the bar; also a line of glasses. There is a spittoon in front of the bar. The bartender is standing right by the beer taps. The full size of this postcard is on this web page.

There is always more picture postcards of Main Street in Rochester. Every line of postcards at one time had to have at least one for their collection.

The strangest new one is this postcard of the two chimneys in Kodak Park. The postcard says that they are the tallest in the US. At one time having chimneys belching smoke meant that your city was advancing their industries. One of those two chimneys in Kodak Park has been torn down and now the other one is so clean you never see any smoke.

Another group of pictures are ones that I took of new Historic Highway Markers. I ended up taking 12 pictures of newer markers. The William C. Pomeroy Foundation has been funding the placement of new markers around the US. One of those was not really on a highway. It was next to the Soldiers’ Memorial Tower outside of Brockport. I have been wanting to visit it for years and never have because it is up a hill and was not really sure where it is located. I did find it and made it up the hill and took a picture of the tower and a picture of the marker. There was going to be a veteran’s cemetery next to tower but the story I heard was that after just a few burials they were removed to larger cemeteries. To my surprise on my way back down I noticed a couple of tombstones about halfway down the hill. So I guess there are still some Civil War soldiers buried there.

Go explore the pictures collection. I checked and there are now 3805 Monroe County pictures in the collection.
