Elvis had his last top 10 hit in 1972 with “Burning Love.” He is recognized as the best-selling solo music artist of all time by Guinness World Records. He toured a lot in 1973 and 1974 in spite of the fact that is health was getting worse. It didn’t help that he was also starting to abuse drugs. When he died in 1977 he was only 42 years of age.
“Burning Love” only got up to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of Oct. 22 – 28. It got to the top of the Cash Box Top 100 chart for the week of Nov. 5 – 11.
The first video is the original single version of the song. Then the second video is a live version from the 1973 TV special Aloha from Hawaii.
I may be one of your few readers writing from Memphis. I never felt Elvis was of my generation. He went on Ed Sullivan in 1956, I think, which is the year so many of us Baby Boomers were born. I was in high school in 1972 in Rochester when he had his last big hit. It is a great song, although I don’t think I realized it at the time. I listen to a play list of Elvis now and all I have is respect for him. He was the total package—a great voice, a fine showman, an excellent dancer, great looks, a generous spirit and a humble person. This Elvis hit of 1972 is one of my top two he recorded.
