WXXI recently had this story about librarians at the Rochester Public Library re-discovering some of the things in their local history collection.
The audio and the text are slightly different but basically say the same thing. It points out how RPL has many things that they didn’t know they had in their collection. I think would be the same for a lot of bigger libraries. It takes a lot of effort to catalog collections and in the past cataloging wasn’t as detailed as it is today..

Hi Dick,
How interesting! Bob Scheffel has an interesting and fun job. Rochester history is fascinating and it’s also important. I hope they will post information about the things they find for those of us who won’t be able to go to the library to see them.
I’m now inspired to research where the land was that Benjamin Barton bought from Ebenezer Allan in 1792. It will be fun!
Thank you for sharing this.
That land that Allan sold to Barton would be centered on where the Rochester War Memorial is now. That is where the mill was. The mill stones are mounted on the 2nd floor wall in the County Office Building.
It sounds like they plan a display or displays of some of the new things they have re-discovered.
Hi Dick,
Thanks for this info. That’s interesting about the mill stones being mounted there. Wow!
In the recording, I heard them say that they plan to create a display, and that’s wonderful. It only would be accessible to the people who live in Rochester and can go to the library, though.
I’ll bet they will find other treasures. I love the things the library has made available online, and I hope they will share information about any exciting things they discover.
