2018 in Review

This is a report of additions and changes to the GenWeb of Monroe County for this year.

Karen Dau finished her 11 year project to copy all the tombstones in the newer sections of Mt. Hope Cemetery. That means that all the tombstones have been copied in that huge cemetery. To see all different sections, go to this starting page. I found and extracted most of the burial records for St. Patrick’s Cemetery that used to be on Pinnacle Hill in Rochester. Those burial records had been hiding in the Archives of the Diocese of Rochester. I also updated the tombstone list for St. Mary’s Cemetery in the Town of Perinton.

I scanned 11 school yearbooks ranging from 1915 to 1968. Then because there are other yearbooks elsewhere on the web, I created a Yearbook page that links to all the Monroe County school yearbooks that I could find. It should be noted that the largest colleges; U. of R., RIT, and SUNY Brockport have all scanned and posted their entire collection of yearbooks.

I extracted newspaper marriages and deaths from Jan. 1834 – June 1835. Also updated death records of the Western NY Masonic Relief Assoc. Those can be found on the Vital Records page.

The Online Books, etc. page has all kinds of new items that were scanned. The largest is “The Land of the Senecas” by Arch Merrill. There are also two new church histories; Third Presbyterian and Holy Redeemer. Smaller items include 6 issues of “Life at McCurdy’s,” 9 issues of “Rochester TV Life,” and 3  programs from Rochester auto show from the 1950s. A few years ago there got to be so many online book links that I had to create some separate page. One of those is for Kodak books, etc. Added to that page, this year, was a whole year of the “Kodakery” magazine from 1923 – 1924. At that time that magazine was for amateur photographers. Also added some other small Kodak magazines. I also have a separate web page for Theater programs. Added 23 new programs to that web page.

Ended the year by corrupting the pictures database on the website. It should be back eventually. Just have to wait for Support person to do a restore.

What is coming in 2019? More yearbooks for sure. I have another 15 in my stack to be scanned. Probably another book by Arch Merrill. Probably another year of Kodakery magazines. Lots of other random items. One thing that I was going to do in 2018 was a audio-video program. That didn’t happen. Maybe that will get done in 2019.

  2. Thank you for all your work for local genealogists. I have a grandmother and her family buried in Holy Redemer cemetery and involved in Rochester. Looking forward to finding out more.
